2026 Oregon Sight-In Days Recap

Lead-free Hunting Oregon helped hunters across Oregon test lead-free ammo before hunting season, giving people a chance to try out hunting ammo in their rifles at no cost!

This fall, Lead-free Hunting Oregon (LFHO) worked with Oregon Hunters Association, the Albany Rifle and Pistol Club, and Four Corners Rod and Gun Club to get hunters sighted-in for their big game seasons with lead-free ammunition. At three different sight-in events in September, LFHO brought out free lead-free ammunition for interested hunters to test out of their rifles, and educational materials for those interested in learning more about hunting ammunition.

Hunters who attended sight-in days in Albany or Salem had the opportunity to try lead-free ammunition out of their rifles for free on specific weekends. Hunters were able to test five rounds at a time, and had the opportunity to shoot multiple brands of ammunition out of their rifles to see which ammunition shot the smallest group. LFHO staff was at the range throughout the weekend with ammunition, shot gel ballistic gels, and epoxies made from shot bullets, for hunters to learn more about ammunition terminal performance.

LFHO also hosted a sight-in day with Oregon Hunter Association’s Learn to Hunt Program. Several new hunters from this program attended the event and learned how to sight-in their rifles for the field season. LFHO also shot ballistic gels with lead and lead-free ammunition at this event, giving new hunters a chance to learn more about the terminal ballistics of hunting ammunition.

Staff interacted with over 100 hunters throughout the sight-in season, many of whom tested lead-free ammunition. Many thanks to Oregon Hunters Association, the Albany Rifle and Pistol Club, and Four Corners Rod and Gun Club for working together on these events! We will continue to participate in sight-in days going forward so if you missed the chance to try ammunition this year, make sure you check out our social media and website calendar for more sight-in days in September 2027. Good luck to everyone this season!

A wide selection of makes, models, and weights of bullets were available for people to try in their own rifles to find what worked the best.
